Device for Ultraviolet Light Sterilization of Face Masks and Other Items

A portable, ultraviolet C-based system to sanitize both surgical/cloth and N95 face masks and other personal items

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in late 2019/early 2020, interest has grown exponentially over the use of UVC light to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. UVC does have the ability to kill other viruses including the SARS-Coronavirus, which is a different virus from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The mechanism of action for UVC involves a breakdown of the outer protein coating of the virus, thereby leading to its inactivation. One study1 found that 15 minutes of UVC exposure inactivated the SARS-Coronavirus, thus making it impossible for the virus to replicate. Additionally, the use of UVC disinfection systems have been evaluated against the MERS-CoV2 virus and was found to reduce over 99.99% of the viral
