Researchers have discovered a series of peptide sequences derived from the SARs-CoV-2 virus that are optimal to elicit a potent immune response across the entire human population that can be engineered into a vaccine.
The highly immunogenic and population-scale SARS-CoV-2 vaccine epitopes were identified using computational prediction methods that were originally developed to interrogate protein-level enrichment of hotspot cancer mutations across a population. The epitopes contain both highly conserved regions found in other coronaviruses as well as newly acquired regions of SARS-CoV-2. This allows for the epitopes’ potential to provide immunity across a wider diversity of coronaviruses and future mutated versions of SARS-CoV-2.
