Recyclable and Reconfigurable High-Performance Polymers and Networks

New polymers with performance attributes of those used today with opportunities to recycle them using low-cost and scalable chemical process

Background

The recycling of plastics is key to a sustainable materials economy with minimal environmental impact. Unfortunately, today’s plastics are not recycled to any appreciable extent, as the incentive to do so is low. This is due to the low value of recovered plastic materials as well as the cost and energy intensity of the processes needed. Researchers from Berkeley Lab have invented a new class of polymers that have performance attributes of polymers in use today with new opportunities to recycle them using low-cost and scalable chemical processes.
