COLOR: A Low-cost Optodiagnostic for Minute-time-scale Detection of SARS-CoV-2

Low cost, rapid colorimetric diagnostic test for COVID-19 utilizing functionalized cotton swabs and gold nanoparticles modified with ACE2

Background

The de la Fuente lab has developed a colorimetric diagnostic test for COVID-19, referred to as COLOR (COvid-19 Low-cost Optodiagnostic for Rapid testing). The test is a colorimetric biosensor utilizing functionalized cotton swabs and gold nanoparticles modified with ACE2 (human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2). COLOR costs $0.15 to produce and can detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 within 5 minutes at very low viral particle loads (LOD 0.154 pg/mL). The test has point-of-care and at-home applications.
