Of the top 20 causes of epidemics between 2011 and 2017, 14 were caused by a virus. Wellcome Trust estimates that epidemics cost the world $60bn a year. The extent of the problem of viral epidemics is particularly apparent as we live through the COVID-19 pandemic. The Asian Development Bank has estimated that the Coronavirus pandemic could cost the global economy between $6tn and $9tn. At the same time, it is estimated that the UK governments efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic will cost more than £300bn for this financial year.
